Discord Tutorial
If you are new to Discord, or just need to learn something we've put together a few basic tutorials for you to get the most out of Discord.
Turn on Dark Mode
PC
- Click the cog on the bottom left, next to your username
- Click Appearance (under App Settings)
- Click Dark
Mobile
- Tap the hamburger menu
- Tap your avatar
- Tap Appearance
- Tap Dark
Audio Settings
PC
- Click the cog on the bottom left, next to your username
- Click Voice & Video
- Choose your Input Device and Output Device
- Click Let's Check and test your audio
- Enable:
- Automatically determine input sensitivity
- Echo cancellation
- Noise reduction
- Advanced voice sensitivity
- You can also enable push-to-talk and set your key bind, or head over to keybinds and set push to mute or toggle mute.
Mobile
- Tap the hamburger menu
- Tap your avatar
- Tap Voice
- Enable:
- Auto Sensitivity
- Echo Cancellation
- Noise Reduction
- Automatic Gain Control
- You can also change your input mode to push-to-talk which will show a button you will need to hold when in a voice channel to talk.
Notification Settings
PC
Server
- Click the down arrow next to the server name
- Click notification settings
- Set as desired
Channel
- Right click the channel name
- Change Mute Channel as desired
- Change Notification Settings as desired
Mobile
Server
- Tap the hamburger menu
- Tap the three dots next to the server name
- Tap Notifications
- Set as desired
Channel
- Tap the hamburger menu
- Tap and hold on the channel name
- Tap Notification Settings
- Set as desired
Text Channels
Select a channel you would like to join beginning with a # you will then be able to type and send your message. Click the hamburger menu to view the various channels on mobile devices.
You can attach files, gifs, or emojis to your messages unless disabled by admins. You can also reply a message by clicking on the reply arrow when you hover over a previous message, or tap and hold on a mobile device.
If you want to mention a person or role in a channel type @ and select their name or role.
- Make sure you are posting in a relevant channel.
- Channels with a padlock are reserved for certain roles.
- Channels reserved for announcements should be read only.
- Regularly check pinned posts for important information, mobile users will need to tap the 2 people in the top right to see pinned comments.
- Never @here or @everyone, different servers will have different rules in pace for mentioning roles (generally should be avoided)
Audio Channels
Select a channel you would like to join beginning with a speaker you will then be able to talk and listen to the channel.
You can mute your mic by selecting the mic , you can deafen yourself by selecting the headphones, you can disconnect by selecting the phone.
You can change a users volume by right clicking or taping and holding on a users profile within the channel. Admins and moderators can also mute/deafen/disconnect/move a user from a channel.
- Channels with a padlock are reserved for certain roles.
- You will need to enable permissions the first time you connect using a mobile device.
- If you are in a noisy environment or are speaking with people not on a call you should enable push-to-talk or use toggle mute.
Privacy
To prevent spam, unwanted connections, age restricted content or more you may want to set a few things in the privacy and safety settings.
PC
- Click the cog on the bottom left, next to your username
- Click Voice & Video
Here you can set if direct messages are scanned and deleted if they contain explicit media content.

- Click Privacy & Safety
To disable direct messaging untick Allow direct messages from server members, if you leave this ticked I would suggest unticking Enable message requests from server members you may not know.
You can enable access to age-restricted servers in iOS, and allow access to age-restricted commands from apps in direct messages.
You can also control what data is shared with Discord from this menu.
Mobile
